A labiaplasty improves the look and function of the labia; the lips of the vaginal opening. The labia minora is the inner flap of skin that covers the clitoris and vagina. The labia majora is the portion of the labia on the outside of the body. The labia can become loose or stretched through sexual activity, hormones, childbirth or with age. In some cases the excess skin can present hygiene problems or make sexual intercourse and other activities uncomfortable. With a labiaplasty, the extra skin is removed and the labia reshaped into a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

How is a labiaplasty done? |
 |
The surgeon removes (with scalpel, radiofrequency cauterizing or laser) excess tissue of the labia minora. The labia majora, on the outside of the body, can be reduced with either surgery or liposuction if needed.

- Are the desired results I described realistic?
- Where is the surgery performed? How long will the procedure take?
- What kind of anesthesia is used?
- How much does it cost?
- What is your experience in performing this procedure? (How long has he/she performed this procedure, and how many has he/she performed in the past year?)
- What percentage of patients have had significant complications? (The physician should disclose this information to you.)
- Will you repeat or correct procedures if it does not meet agreed upon goals? And if the procedure must be corrected, will I be charged again? (The physician should provide you with his/her policy on this issue.)
- May I see "before and after" photos of recent patients? The physician should provide many photos of recent patients.
- May I have the names and contact information for several recent patients? (Follow up to get first-hand information on the procedure and the surgeon.)
- Could I observe the exact procedure I am considering before I decide to have the surgery? (Either on videotape or ask to view one in real life.)
- Should I have blood drawn ahead of time in case I need a transfusion
- What should I expect post-operatively, in terms of soreness, what to watch for, medication, bathing, and level of activity?
- Who will be assisting during the surgery? What are their qualifications? (Does the plastic surgeon perform the entire surgery?)
