Before we know it, Spring will arrive. Soon thereafter, we will be welcoming Summer! What does this mean to body-conscious people? That’s right – bikini season. This is often a cause for panic among many women as they rush to their local gym and typically start a crash diet to prepare. However, learning to just say no to junk food can help you lose a few pounds without starving yourself.

Cutting out the sweets and greasy food sounds like torture, but after a day or two, it becomes easier and you feel better all around. Start simple – eliminate carbonated drinks such as sodas and energy drinks, which reduce your sugar and empty calorie intake. Instead, drink water with lemon and unsweetened tea (iced or hot). The lemon water helps to naturally cure indigestion problems and can be a great tool for weight loss. You can also drink warm water with lemon and honey if you really need the sweetener; honey is a healthier alternative to sugar or sugar substitutes. The next step is to look in your pantry and fridge – Do you see cookies, cakes, candy, or other unhealthy treats? Throw them out and avoid re-stocking your fridge with these items. Not purchasing these calorie-packed foods will help you resist temptation all around.

One of the biggest obstacles may be when dining out. Although you may be tempted to order that double cheeseburger with everything on it, look for something less fattening. Most restaurants now offer a “Healthy Options” menu with a variety of choices. These are often lower in calories and fat, while still satisfying your cravings. Stick to protein-rich food; they’ll keep you fuller longer. If you’re on the go and can only go into the drive-thru, look for grilled chicken salads with vinaigrette. Skip the bacon cheeseburger combo and make sure to order tea or water. Also, if you’re out with friends at the mall and you get an itch for ice cream, pop a mint! You’ll curb the sweet tooth and freshen your breath at the same time.

Other helpful tips include having prepared healthy snacks in the fridge, such as carrots or celery in ready-to-go snack bags. Carry an apple or banana with you when you feel hunger kicking in to avoid grabbing a candy bar. You can also brush your teeth whenever you want to snack out of boredom. No one likes eating after brushing!

These are just some of the healthy eating tips I’ve come across. Do you have any of your own? Do share! We love learning about new ways to kick junk food to the wayside.
