Extreme Makeover™ - Season 2, Episode 12
Original Air Date: 01/08/04
This week's show follows the journey of Cynthia, a woman who has nearly lost all of her hearing abilities but now has a chance to regain her hearing. The other story this week is that of Angela, a woman afraid to go out because of her looks.
Cynthia is a 49-year-old mother from Baton Rouge, Louisiana who suffers from congenital hearing loss. She wears a hearing aid but still has to read lips to understand what others are saying. Another problem Cynthia is facing is that she is beginning to lose her vision, which makes it harder for her to read lips. She feels this strain is aging her and making her look older than she really is. She wants an extreme makeover because she feels it would give her so much confidence and peace. Cynthia s father was informed ahead of time and had the responsibility of giving his daughter the good news that she was selected to be on Extreme Makeover the television series.
The first stop on Cynthia s journey is to receive a series of hearing tests. The doctors determine that she is severely, but not totally deaf and has a chance to regain her hearing. Next was a visit to plastic surgeon Dr. Garth Fisher. Cynthia tells the doctor that she wants to look softer, prettier, younger, and fresher. After telling the doctor what she wanted, Dr. Fisher made his suggestions. This included flattening out the stomach, decrease the fullness in the bridge of her nose, and to make improvements on her eyes and make it so that the eyes is what others will notice. Cynthia is very pleased with her consultation with Dr. Fisher.
Cynthia s cosmetic procedures will include:
- Upper and lower eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty)
- Rhinoplasty (nose job)
- Breast augmentation
- Tummy tuck
- Vision correction (LASIK)
- Dental work, including 19 Porcelain veneers
- Improve her hearing
During the operation, Dr. Fisher enhances Cynthia s breast from a size B to a C. Then he improves her lower abdomen. Now that the surgery was complete, it will take eight weeks of recovery before Cynthia has her reveal.
Unfortunately there is too much damage in the middle ear for any procedure to improve Cynthia s hearing. However a new breakthrough digital device can help. Cynthia would become the first person in the U.S. to receive this technology. After receiving this device, Cynthia was able to hear everything. As a treat, Cynthia received a special performance from the Los Angeles Philharmonic just for her.
After paying a visit to cosmetic dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman for dental work, Cynthia then met with Dr. Robert Maloney to determine if Lasik eye surgery can be done to correct her vision. Dr. Maloney told Cynthia he would be able to correct her eyesight. After surgery complete, Cynthia was able to go from eyesight that was nearly fading, to eagle eye vision.
Before going home, "extreme team" stylist Sam Saboura showed up to provide fashion tips and to help Cynthia get ready for her "reveal." Sam helped Cynthia pick out a wardrobe that is sophisticated and quirky. After getting her hair and makeup done, Cynthia was ready to be sent home and reveal her new look to her friends and family.
At an old Governor s mansion in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Cynthia came down the steps of a large staircase wearing a mask. After coming down the steps, she took off her mask to reveal her new look to her friends and family. As a result of being on Extreme Makeover the television series, not only was Cynthia able to regain a youthful appearance, but she also regained her vision and was given "the gift of hearing."
Angela is a 29-year-old mother from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Throughout her childhood she has been called things such as "big nose," "big lips," "ugly," which have hurt her and stuck with her. She would like to have a lip and nose reduction, but would still like to have her African-American heritage to still be distinguishable. Angela feels that having this makeover is a chance for "a fresh start." However, at a family gathering, Angela s family played a video of her sister, who then announced that Angela was selected to be on Extreme Makeover the television series.
Now in Los Angeles, Angela first meets with her plastic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Griffin. Dr. Griffin is a new member of the "extreme team" and is an authority on plastic surgery for ethnic skin types. Dr. Griffin tries to make his patients look natural without losing their ethnic identity. Angela is very afraid of losing her identity, but still wants a nose reduction and lip reduction. Dr. Griffin told Angela that he would try to make her nose look thinner and less flat and bring it more into balance. Angela s nose is the second largest nose the doctor has ever seen. Dr. Griffin feels that this will be the most challenging rhinoplasty (nose job) of his career.
Angela s cosmetic procedures will include:
- Rhinoplasty (nose job)
- Lip reduction
- Blepharoplasty (lower eyelid lift)
- Chin implant
- Tummy tuck
- Breast augmentation
- Skin Treatments
- Dental work
The nose job will test Dr. Griffin s talents. During surgery, Dr. Griffin explains that Angela s nose has no support and places an implant made from donor tissue to build the bridge of her nose. As far as the lips, the doctor feels that it is not necessarily the volume that s the problem, but the projection, particularly of the lower lip. After a several hours, the surgery is complete.
When it was time to take the bandages off, both Angela and Dr. Griffin were anxious to see the results. However, things worked for the best as Angela was happy with the results and was very thankful to Dr. Griffin. He feels the patient s gratitude is their reward.
Now Angela was ready for more of the "extreme team." First meeting with Dr. Ava Shamban for skin treatment and hair removal. Then with fitness coach Michael George to help her with body tone and definition. After that, Angela paid a visit to cosmetic dentist Dr. Bill Dorfman for Davinci veneers. Finally it was visit from stylist Sam Saboura to help her pick out a new wardrobe and to help her get ready for the reveal back home. Sam had Angela squeeze into the smallest size she can get into and because of her makeover; Angela had gone from a size 14 to a size 6. Now Angela is ready to be sent home to rejoin her friends and family with her new look.
Now back home in Wisconsin, Angela was ready to reveal her new look to her friends and family. Angela s favorite part of the reveal was seeing her six kids again. Her husband loved her new look. During the time apart, there were arguments about what she was doing. But now, Angela s husband feels that it was worth the wait. As far as Angela, she feels that this experience has opened up a whole new world for her.
