Extreme Makeover - Dermatology

ABC's Extreme Makeover has taken many applicants from all over the country and helped them to rejuvenate their bodies. Now entering its second season, Extreme Makeover highlights the dramatic changes that can happen with cosmetic surgery.

Many participants often face the task of wanting to diminish those fine lines and deep wrinkles. The wish for a more youthful face has fueled the search for better procedures and techniques. Many are choosing noninvasive procedures suck as skin peels, laser treatments, and injections.

Skin peels can be either deep or superficial. Superficial skin peels rejuvenate the top layers of your skin while deep skin peels target the deeper layers of the skin. Deep skin peels can have incredible results in diminishing wrinkles on the forehead and frown lines as well as removing discoloration of the skin and soothing dryer skin.

An AHA peel is a superficial skin peel named for the Hydro Glycolic acid, which is gentle on your skin. The procedure takes no more than 30 minutes and can be administered in varying strengths. Typically the procedure is repeated usually every six months to maintain results.

TCA is a peeling solution used for deeper skin peels. The procedure also only takes 20 to 30 minutes. TCA works well to treat deeper furrows and lines. It also helps to diminish freckles, blotchy and weathered skin.

Particle skin resurfacing involves using a spray of fine aluminum oxide crystals. These crystals are commonly used in the Mega-Peel. Mega-Peel treatments remove dead skin. The microscopic crystals also increase collagen within the skin. The Mega-Peel can treat hyper pigmentation, acne, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Laser treatments are another non-invasive procedure that many patients and participants of Extreme Makeover are choosing. Laser resurfacing involves using a laser gently over the skin to remove dead skin as well as remove unwanted facial hair. The procedure has little pain and the results can be dramatic.

Botox is one of the more popular forms of injection procedures used to reduce deep wrinkles. Botox works by relaxing the muscles, which smoothes out the skin. The problem with Botox is that it only lasts for about 3 months causing the procedure to be repeated. Similarly, collagen injections have a short lasting period.

New and better treatments are always being developed. Among the advancements are two new procedures targeting wrinkle reduction. Cosmoderm (Cosmoplast) is collagen developed from Humans. Before the advent of Cosmoderm, the collagen used for injections was produced from cows and caused allergic reactions in many patients. In one visit the patient can see immediate results with a single injection. Restylane (pending FDA approval) is a gel composed of a form of sugar (hyaluronic acid). This gel can be injected and is less likely to cause allergic reactions. Results can be seen immediately and it only takes one visit. Restylane also lasts 3 times longer than the shorter lasting collagen. The procedure produces better results with a nicer texture, better durability and lasts longer.

Both Cosmoderm and Restylane plump up the skin and reduce deep and fine lines. Both are roughly the same cost as a Botox or collagen injection, though, neither one is completely permanent.

Extreme Makeover shows the possibilities of a Cosmetic surgery. Extreme Makeover also touches upon the new advancements constantly being and in the area of plastic surgery. Participants show that nose jobs done today look more natural and real. As more and more people enjoy the benefits of cosmetic surgery one can't help but realize that with growing improvements, the realm of Cosmetic and Plastic surgery is Extreme indeed!
