Extreme Makeover™ the television series

On this week’s episode we find a female rancher who wants to be Cinderella; and a homemaker who wants to go back to school with a new look. Their dreams will come true as they become participants in Extreme Makeover™ the television series.

Paula:
Paula is a 43-year-old homemaker from San Angelo, Texas. When she is not a stay-at-home mom, she works as an aerobics instructor and does community service. Paula has always had insecurities about her looks. In school she was teased for her "big nose." Then while teaching aerobics, she thinks everyone is staring at her "big butt." Now Paula wants to go back to school to pursue teaching, but this time with self-confidence. However, at the school, Paula s career counselor told her that she could enroll in classes this semester. Instead she would be going to Hollywood because she would be receiving a makeover.

Paula says she s "nervous" about what she will look like. Then, in Hollywood, she meets with her plastic surgeon, Dr. Malcolm Lesavoy, M.D., F.A.C.S. Paula tells him that she wants her nose smaller, then points out her skin sagging a little bit, and that her eyes have dropped a bit. Dr. Lesavoy does agree that her eyes need work. Plus he points out the hump in her nose and that he would like to work on it, and shorten the nose just a bit. He says, "The key is to look natural." Paula also points out her tummy, and says sit-ups don t do anything to improve its appearance. The last thing she mentions is that her breasts weren t the same after having her third child. Malcolm takes a look and says she is a good candidate for a breast implant. Paula has a good feeling about Dr. Lesavoy and feels that he covered everything during the consultation.

Paula’s surgical makeover will include:

On the day of surgery, Dr. Lesavoy and his team perform on Paula for four hours. He starts on the breasts, then the eyelids. After that, Dr. Lesavoy and his team work on the tummy tuck and finally the nose. Paula wakes up groggy, but less than an hour later, she feels ready to go and workout.

Barely a week after surgery, Paula sees her new nose and thinks it looks great. However her makeover is not over, because it was time for her to visit Dr. Dorfman, D.D.S. for her dental work, which includes zoom whitening and porcelain veneers. Then she visits Dr. Robert Maloney for Lasik eye surgery. After that it was five weeks of working out twice a day with her trainer, Michael Thurmond. In five weeks, Paula went from a size 12 to a size 4, and gained some muscle.

Now that her body makeover was complete, Sam Saboura made the final touches. He provides style tips for Paula, and then takes her out to have her hair and makeup done. After those were complete Paula looks in the mirror and is in tears because she now sees a beautiful woman.

After eight weeks of undergoing an extreme makeover, Paula feels like a different person. She feels "powerful" and now feels "like a woman." When Paula revealed her new look to her family and friends, her husband was shocked and could not believe that that was his wife. He said that she looked special. As for Paula, her experience being on Extreme Makeover the television series has made her feel that she has "the ability to pursue whatever she wants" and "conquer whatever she wants."

Liane:

Liane is a 42-year-old rancher from Wyoming. She works a tough land, doing the job of a man. The effects of working years on the land have finally taken its toll on her face. She thinks she looks like "a weathered up prune." Liane grew up a tomboy and now wants to portray herself as a Cinderella type. She says she s never been the "belle of the ball" or walked into a room and have every eye on her. So Liane s husband gave her a written invitation to the dance, which was actually an invitation to be on Extreme Makeover the television series.

Liane is excited to have a fresh face, not one that looks tired and worn out. Once in Hollywood, she meets the doctor that will help her do just that, Dr. Jon A. Perlman, M.D., F.A.C.S. During consultation, Liane tells Dr. Perlman the parts she feels needs work. She wants her brow lifted, then points out the hump on her nose and then her facial skin. Liane says "she s full of life and doesn t want to look like she s tired." Dr. Perlman agrees about the brow being lifted, but suggest taking it up just a little. Then he tells Liane that he wants to soften the angular features of her nose and balance that with chin work. In regards to her skin, Dr. Perlman mentions laser and chemical peels to take care of that. Liane does mention that she wants a breast lift, but not an implant because she feels fine with her size. Dr. Perlman does suggest that implants would be best for her, and tells her to think about it. At the time of surgery, Liane decides she does not want breast implants.

Liane’s surgical makeover does include:

On the day of surgery, Liane is excited, but not scared. As for Dr. Perlman and his team, they have eight hours of work ahead of them. First, Dr. Perlman harvests some of the fat from Liane to inject her face to help with cheek hollows. Next he works on the chin implant, fat injections, browlift, the laser peel, then finally the nose. Dr. Perlman says that Liane s surgery "went well and that it will make her look rested."

Four days after surgery, Liane visits Dr. Perlman and sees that the ravages of working on a ranch have been cleared from her face. Liane looks in the mirror and is in tears, she says, "it still looks like me, but only better."

Liane s next operation involves dental work with Dr. Dorfman who uses zoom whitening and porcelain veneers to give her a dental makeover. Liane also begins working out with Michael Thurmond, however during her workout she decides to go back into surgery. At the last minute, she decides to proceed with a breast augmentation to bring her breasts to a full C. This procedure takes the doctor only one hour. Later Liane meets with celebrity stylist Sam Saboura to give her some style tips and to escort her to stylists to have her hair and makeup done.

Liane feels that working on a ranch robbed her of her femininity. Then at her reveal, her husband tells her she looks magnificent and that she is beautiful to him. He says her look will "knock your eyes out." Liane s feelings about her extreme makeover were that she was the belle of the ball, but in the grown up sense. People were there for her because of who she was and not what she looked like. She says she "went on this journey only to find out that she was okay to begin with."
