As we wind down and head into President’s Day weekend I thought I’d take a moment to look back on past Presidents, First Ladies, and presidential candidates that cosmetic surgery has either helped or haunted.

Barack & Michelle Obama

Barack and Michelle Obama

While there has been speculation that both the President and First Lady Michelle Obama have undergone facial procedures such as nose surgery and possibly even Botox, most critics agreed that their youthful appearance was a result of good genes and a healthy lifestyle.

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton Before and After

The 67th United States Secretary of State and former First Lady has been the center of many cosmetic debates over the years.  In 2008, Alabama plastic surgeon Dr. Rob Oliver Jr. fingered Clinton among a number of other legislatures as recipients of Botox.  The topic came up again in a recent Orange County Register article, but suggested to readers that if she is using Botox, it’s in moderation.

Sarah Palin

Former Vice Presidential candidate and potential 2012 Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin took the internet by storm in June of last year when rumors quickly spread that she had undergone breast augmentation.  The rumor, which started on the political gossip site Wonkette, was debated for weeks and was a hot topic both online and off.

George W. Bush & Laura Bush

In 2004, MSNBC reporter Jeannette Walls reported that many were speculating that then President George W. Bush had undergone nose surgery.

Laura Bush Before and After

In 2009, TMZ.com highlighted former First Lady Laura Bush as a plastic surgery recipient comparing a photo from 2001 to a photo in 2008.

First Ladies with First Class Faces

In the January 27, 1992 issue of People Magazine, titled “Plastic Surgery of the Stars,” reporters identified former First Lady Nancy Reagan as a recipient of both a facelift and nose surgery.  The issue also reported that Rosalynn Carter and Jacqueline Onassis had undergone an eye lift.

Another “star” identified as having plastic surgery was former First Lady Betty Ford.  People Magazine reported that she had undergone facelift surgery.

The Race for The Smoothest Face

Former presidential candidates John Kerry and John McCain both took heat during their campaigns for allegedly receiving Botox injections as a means of looking younger and more appealing to voters.

Finally, as I conclude this plastic surgery list of presidential proportions, I thought I would point out one more historic fact related to the presidency and plastic surgery.  In 1969, President Richard Nixon appointed Dr. Hal B. Jennings, a plastic surgeon, as the Surgeon General.
