Keep Calm and Get Botox

Why not being able to frown can be good!

Botox often gets a bad rap for leaving commoners and celebrities alike as expressionless as Kristen Stewart.  Since Botox works to relax the contraction of muscles by blocking nerve impulses, the muscles can no longer contract, resulting in softened wrinkles.  So that "mad wrinkle" in between your brows? It will disappear for about four months - right along with your ability to put it to good use.  But according to a recent study, not being able to frown can actually be a good thing.

Researchers from the University of Kansas had college students fake a smile or a neutral expression and then put them in a stressful situation.  Results indicated that those who smiled - whether the smiles were genuine or not - experienced lower heart rates and reduced stress responses compared to those who frowned or stiffened their faces.  

Why so serious?

Lead researcher Sarah Pressman, Ph.D., an assistant professor at the University of Kansas, suggests that using the muscles to smile even if you aren't particularly happy, can send the message to our brains that we actually are. As a result, this happiness causes us to perceive stress differently and feel less threatened, thus decreasing the Lucille Ballheart rate.  (Read more about the study at

So, what about face lifts that go wrong and leave women looking constantly surprised?  Does this tell their brains that they actually are?  Studies have yet to be done on that subject.  

At any rate, if your initial reaction to stress is to Freak Out and Get Mad, rather than Keep Calm and Carry On, Botox just might be your quick fix.
