New High Profile Saline Implants Now Available

Efforts are continually being made to improve the products offered to plastic surgery patients. One of the newest products to emerge in the marketplace is a new type of saline filled breast implant. This so-called “high profile” implant, produced by the Mentor Corporation, provides yet another option for those women considering breast augmentation to enhance their appearance. This product is now available in participating plastic surgery offices.

These new implants are called “high profile” because their shape differs from the shape of standard saline filled implants. They have a narrower base, or diameter, than regular saline implants of the exact same volume. This means that more of the volume of the breast implant contributes to projection and shape rather than to the width of the breast. This breast implant is particularly applicable for women with narrow chests or slim builds who still want the freedom to choose among different sized implants.

Depending on the shape of the individual’s chest, she may be a candidate for these new implants and may achieve an improved shape and more natural appearance. As with other saline implants, these implants are of proven safety. They may also be placed through various incisions, either through the armpit, around the belly button, around the nipple, or underneath the breast. Similarly, they may be placed above or below the muscle of the chest wall.

Breast augmentation has experienced tremendous popularity in our culture, and is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. Last year, over 200,000 women underwent breast augmentation in this country. Individuals who most often seek breast augmentation include those who are self-conscious wearing a swimsuit or form-fitting top, those who find it difficult to obtain properly fitting clothing because of a disparity in hip and breast size, those who experience a change in size or shape of the breasts with weight loss or after having children, or those who have one breast noticeably smaller than the other.

Breast augmentation is typically performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes approximately one hour to perform. At the completion of the procedure, and after a short recovery, the patient is able to go home in the company of a friend or relative. Recovery is remarkably fast, and many patients take very little, if any, pain medication and may return to work within a few days.
