FDA Approves NLiteTM Laser for Wrinkle Therapy

by David A. Bray, MD, FACS

Afraid of the downtime, gruesome healing, pain, and out of sight pricing usually associated with laser resurfacing? Now a totally new laser is available for wrinkle treatment. Only 500 doctors nationwide have been trained for the NLiteTM Laser, which has just received FDA approval. The NLiteTM works by sfely bypassing the outer surface of the skin, directly targeting the subdermal layer of dermis. The NLiteTM mimics an irritation of the dermis, therby stimulating collagen production. The new collagen growth fills in the cracks or the void in the wrinkle, which reducing the crease of the wrinkle.

The most amazing benefit to the patient is ease of treatment. There is no pain or burning therefore no need for anesthesia. There is no surface redness or irritation. With other conventional lasers, patients suffered through several weeks of healing followed by many months of bright pink skin. There was also a high risk of hypo-pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation and the possibility of keloid scarring, along with a risk of infection. With the NLiteTM there is absolutely no downtime and no aftercare. Because there is no need for anesthesia, there is a huge cost savings for the patient. This is the single most importatin medical advancement for the treatment of wrinkles in decades.

In studies submitted to the FDA, collagen growth was measured for a period of 9 months. It was discovered that collagen growth begins within 72 hours after treatment. Maximum growth was achieved at 90 days , when the collagen production increased to 84.5%. Patients questioning how long the new collagen will last, need to be educated. Unlike injectable collagen, which is injected as a temporary filler and needs to be repeated three to four times a year, this collagen is your own body tissue and will not be absorbed. In the nine months study submitted to the FDA, collagen remained with no regression. In addition, areas that were not treatable by conventional lasers such as the chest and neck, can now be targeted and safely treated for wrinkles by the NLiteTM.

Patients can come in, be treated in less than a half hour and leave to go back to work. 90 days later they can expect a 60% reduction in wrinkle. Fine lines are dramatically reduced and deep wrinkles are softened substantially. Demand is high, with good reason. For the first time patients can reap the benefits of laser rejuvenation without the disruptive downtime associated with healing, and at a fraction of the cost of other conventional lasers.

There are currently only two lasers available in Southern California from San Diego to Santa Barbara. Physicians had to lease them from the manufacturer for a particular day. The Bray Facial Plastic Surgery Medical Center, in Torrance has signed the first lease purchase agreement in the State of California and will be offering NLiteTM to patients on a regular basis.
